[I offer praṇāmas unto the most worshipable lion-like ācārya, jagad-guru oṁ viṣṇupāda aṣṭottara-śata Śrī Śrīmad Bhakti Prajñāna Keśava Gosvāmī Mahārāja, who nurtures with extreme, divine affection as a parental guardian those who take shelter of him, who is always genuinely unhappy to see the suffering jīvas who have turned away from Kṛṣṇa, and who is bestowing upon them śrī nāma along with prema. (Śrī Gauḍīya Gīti-guccha: Śrīla Bhakti Prajñāna Keśava Gosvāmī praṇāma)]
vāñchā-kalpa-tarubyaś ca kṛpā-sindhubhya eva ca patitānāṁ pāvanebhyo vaiṣṇavebhyo namo namaḥ
[I offer praṇāmas unto the Vaiṣṇavas, who are just like wish-fulfilling desire trees, who are an ocean of mercy, and who deliver the fallen, conditioned souls. (Śrī Gauḍīya Gīti-guccha: Śrī Vaiṣṇava vandanā)]
namo mahā-vadānyāya kṛṣṇa-prema-pradāya te kṛṣṇāya kṛṣṇa-caitanya-nāmne gaura-tviṣe namaḥ
[I offer praṇāma unto Śrī Kṛsṇa-Caitanya, who is Śrī Kṛṣṇa Himself. Having assumed the golden hue of Śrīmatī Rādhikā, He is munificently bestowing kṛṣṇa-prema, the rarest of all gifts. (Śrī Gauḍīya Gīti-guccha: Śrīman Mahāprabhu vandanā)]
Śrīla Gurudeva: I remember one (indistinct audio) of Śrīla Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura. Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura, who is he? He is (a) manifestation of Gadādhara Paṇḍita. And who is Gadādhara? Rādhā Herself. Rādhikā.
So, Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura, in (the) modern age, he is one of the gosvāmīs, saptam gosvāmī. After (indistinct audio) gosvāmī. Anyone we have not called saptam, but why (is) Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura called, as Rūpa Gosvāmī wrote so many books, his realization he wrote. Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura has written like that. And if he was not in this modern age, then bhakti (would) have gone to Goloka Vṛndāvana, (it would) not (be) in this world.
So, he has told:
kṛṣṇera saṁsāra kara chāḍi’ anācāra jīve dayā, kṛṣṇa-nāma – sarva-dharma-sāra (4)
["Carry on your worldly duties but in relation to Kṛṣṇa, and give up sinful behavior. Show compassion to all fallen souls by loudly chanting the holy name of Krṣṇa: this is the essence of all forms of religion." (Śrī Gauḍīya Gīti-guccha: Nadīyā-Godrume)]
Like Rūpa Gosvāmī he told. What (did) he (tell)? He has told the essence of all the śikṣās, teachings. That what…?
smṛtyoḥ krameṇa rasanā-manasī niyojya
tiṣṭhan vraje tad-anurāgi-janānugāmī
kālaṁ nayed akhilam ity upadeśa-sāram
[While living in Vraja as a follower of the eternal residents of Vraja, who possess inherent spontaneous love for Śrī Kṛṣṇa, one should utilize all his time by sequentially engaging the tongue and the mind in meticulous chanting and remembrance of Kṛṣṇa's names, form, qualities and pastimes. This is the essence of all instruction. (Śrī Upadeśāmṛta 8)]
Śrīla Gurudeva: Yes. Go on. What is the meaning? Give her one (the microphone). Can you explain? Oh, see, see. Can you?
Śyāmarāṇī dāsī: Śrīla Rūpa Gosvāmī is writing in the eighth verse of Śrī Upadeśāmṛta, the essence of all instructions...
Śrīla Gurudeva: No. It is (the) essence of all...
Śyāmarāṇī dāsī: …all Veda, Upaniṣads, Mahābhārata, Gītā...
Śrīla Gurudeva: …śāstra, Caitanya-caritāmṛta, and everything! Essence of vaiṣṇava literature given by (Rūpa Gosvāmī) all this is…
Śyāmarāṇī dāsī: …all in one śloka.
The essence of all advice, he says, is that 24-hours a day, day and night, one should very carefully chant the holy name, fame, form, pastimes, and qualities of the Lord and at the same time one should live in Vṛndāvana, if not by body then by mind. He should be under the....
Śrīla Gurudeva: …better to be in by body.
Śyāmarāṇī dāsī: …and if it's absolutely not possible, then at least by mind. One should be under the guidance of Kṛṣṇa's associates from Goloka Vṛndāvana and also those same associates take forms as followers of those associates in this world. For example, one should be under the guidance of Lalitā devī there and one should be under the guidance of Svarūpa Damodara here. So…
And step by step one should chant in this very nice way: sukīrtanānu. But what does su mean? This word, very nice, su-kīrtana, has a very deep meaning. According to the name one chants one should think of the pastimes and qualities of that name and:
kṛṣṇaṁ smaran janaṁ cāsya
kuryād vāsaṁ vraje sadā*
["A devotee should always reside in the transcendental realm of Vraja and always engage in kṛṣṇaṁ smaran janaṁ cāsya preṣṭham, the remembrance of Śrī Kṛṣṇa and His beloved associates. By following in the footsteps of such associates and by entering under their eternal guidance, one can acquire an intense desire to serve the Supreme Personality of Godhead." (Bhakti-rasāmṛta-sindhu 1.2.294)]
Not only Kṛṣṇa alone but with His most intimate associates. Especially those associates who are leaders of the service of my own svarūpa. I should think about their līlā as I chant those names of Kṛṣṇa and pray that I may enter into that eternal service.
Śrīla Gurudeva: Thank you. But if anyone is not qualified so much and he has so many anarthas. So, he has something attached to his body and worldly things. And he is not free from worldly desires, sense gratification, all these things. Then what he should do? Can he follow this śloka or not? (If you think) he should not. Oh, (then) you are wrong.
What your Prabhupāda is telling? You should read there.
You should give him. You know. That very line.
If anyone (is) not even qualified but he has some greed for this. Though he is not free from worldly desires. So many anarthas are there – but not aparādhī and not māyāvādī associates.
So, if...what he is telling?
Prema Prayojana dāsa: This is the Nectar of Instruction...
Śrīla Gurudeva: You should try to give your ears there. Attention.
Prema Prayojana dāsa: The Nectar of Instruction by Śrīla Rūpa Gosvāmīpāda, text eight, in the purport of Śrīla A.C. Śrīla Bhaktivedānta Svāmī Prabhupāda. Śrīla Prabhupāda is writing there:
"Again Śrīla Rūpa Gosvāmī states in Bhakti-rasāmṛta-sindhu (1.2.295):
sevā sādhaka-rūpeṇa siddha-rūpeṇa cātra hi tad-bhāva-lipsunā kāryā vraja-lokānusārataḥ
“In the transcendental realm of Vraja [Vraja-dhāma] one should serve the Supreme Lord, Śrī Kṛṣṇa, with a feeling similar to that of His associates, and one should place himself under the direct guidance of a particular associate of Kṛṣṇa and should follow in his footsteps. This method is applicable both in the stage of sādhana [spiritual practices executed while in the stage of bondage] and in the stage of sādhya [God realization], when one is a siddha-puruṣa, or a spiritually perfect soul.”
Śrīla Gurudeva: What is (the) meaning? What (did) he told?
Śrīla Gurudeva: Oh, don't try to sleep. Don't try. Try to listen very carefully.
Devotee: Here Śrīla Prabhupāda is explaining that this practice applies to a devotee who is still in…
Śrīla Gurudeva: What process?
Devotee: This process that is being outlined in the verse of Upadeśāmṛta. That this applies not only to the devotee who is a liberated devotee but also to a devotee who is in a state of bondage, who still has anarthas, attachment to the material body, and other material desires.
Śrīla Gurudeva: Oh this is the…what?
Devotee: …essence of all instruction.
Śrīla Gurudeva: No. No. This is (the) difference of opinion between myself and all leaders of ISKCON. All. All. They are of the opinion (that) a man who is liberated only, and he is in Goloka (Vṛndāvana), then they can do. But I follow Svāmīji—totally.
Devotees: (applause) jaya Gurudeva!
Śrīla Gurudeva: I follow totally him. I can not go here and there – a straight line.
So, I don't know whether they have read or not. They read or not? They should know. And they should be in his Svāmīji line. If they are not following really they are not disciples of Svāmīji.
Devotees: (applause) Gaura premānande! Hari hari bol!
Śrīla Gurudeva: But from (the) beginning. From beginning. I have come only to glorify him and to be line and to also to help you to that you should be in his line. Don't delay. Those who are not in his line now they have given up chanting and in the last they are drowning and they are not following him.
So, I want to help you to be your in the line of your gurudeva. And also you all in a proper line of Śrīla Rūpa Gosvāmī. He has told for all. Rūpa Gosvāmī you can think that he is a manifestation of Śrīla Gaura-Sundara, Śacī-nandana Gaurahari. He gave his everything in him.
rāsa-tattva, sādhyāḥ tattva, sādhana tattva, Kṛṣṇa tattva...
All...prema, rāsa – everything He told (to Rūpa Gosvāmī). And (then He) told, "I will be silent. I will be always in mood. I can not do. If I tell Kṛ – I become senseless. How can I do? But I am giving this power—that you will not be in faint. Never and never. And you should preach it boldly here and there." And he did.
So, like this Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura is like that. He was inspired by Śrīla Rūpa Gosvāmī, by Caitanya Mahāprabhu his Gaura sakti. So, he can do like this. And that is why he told (the) same thing in (a) new bottle.
kṛṣṇera saṁsāra kara chāḍi’ anācāra jīve dayā, kṛṣṇa-nāma – sarva-dharma-sāra (4)
What is the meaning? kṛṣṇera saṁsāra kara. You should try to make a saṁsāra of Kṛṣṇa. Not your family saṁsāra. What saṁsāra? Family of Kṛṣṇa. Your wealth, your body, your senses, your all minus, you should use in Kṛṣṇa. If you are doing, this is good thing. Don't think that, "Oh, I should be renounced. I should give this. I should give all my possessions. My wealth and everything to bogus persons. I should distribute. And I should be naked like this." Oh, you can not serve Kṛṣṇa.
Nothing to for our enjoyment and nothing to be renounced, to give up. Nothing. Nothing is yours that you can give up. If Gurudeva gave you one pair of his sandal, wooden sandal, you should take it. If he wears in his feet it is (an) offense. Understand?
And if he throws out, "I have no need." Then what is it? More offense. What should he do? He should take these sandals on his head. Sometimes with a tear. Sometimes on heart. Oh, my gurudeva like Bharata. Rama sandals.
And if he throws out he is guilty. He is offensive. And if he wears he is offensive. So, what you have? Try to make a saṁsāra of Kṛṣṇa. By all means like Pāṇḍavas. More than that. Gopīs, Gopas, Nanda-baba. Nanda-baba sometimes he is more tyāgī, renounced, than even Nārada and Śukadeva Gosvāmī. Śukadeva Gosvāmī left his everything and he became renounced. And what he did? Nanda-baba? His wife is serving Kṛṣṇa. His brother, Upananda, and all are serving Him. His wealth is serving Kṛṣṇa. His mind is serving Kṛṣṇa. His senses are serving Kṛṣṇa. So, he is superior. Nārada will come and in mind he will do praṇāma, sāṣṭānga-pranāma, lakhs and lakhs time to Nanda-baba and Yaśodā. Nothing to give up.
So, kṛṣṇera saṁsāra kara very...what meaning? Deep meaning. So, you can do kṛṣṇera saṁsāra but don't try to enjoy yourself. That this is mine.
So, kṛṣṇera saṁsāra kara. Really, in a real sense kṛṣṇera saṁsāra kara chāḍi’ anācāra.
Chāḍi’ anācāra means…?
Śyāmarāṇī dāsī: Give up all bad habits.
Śrīla Gurudeva: Bad habits.
So, give up all kinds of anarthas. Very strongly you should take the favorable things of bhakti. And very strictly you should give up what is not favorable for bhakti. Even most our what? Beloved wife, children, wealth, reputation, anything, friendship. Like Sanātana Gosvāmī, Rūpa Gosvāmī, Śrī Raghunātha Dāsa Gosvāmī.
Don't do anything which is an-ācāra, which is against ācāra—bhakti ācāra.
And then second line:
If he is madhyama-adhikārī he should have very...What dayā means?
Devotees: Mercy. Compassion.
Śrīla Gurudeva: Compassion for them all. Without self-gain. If anyone is not self-gain, does not want, then he can do anything. Only he is crying bitterly, Svāmīji our gurudeva, Śrīla Prabhupāda, Śrīla Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura (they are) always crying for general persons who are engaged in sense gratification. How should I help them? And always doing for that.
You know Narottama Ṭhākura? He was giving up this world and even that what he was doing? He was preaching. Even he gave sannyāsa to brāhmaṇas being in (lower) caste.
So, all began to tell him that he is initiating brāhmaṇas and that is why he has become paralyzed. Then his disciples requested him, "Prabhu, don't play this game. Otherwise all will be against you and they will tell that he is offensive to brāhmaṇas and that is why he has become paralyzed."
Quickly at once he became alright and he used to walk five or six miles to Ganges and going and taking bath and chanting, remembering. Then they wondered how he became (healthy)? He was paralyzed and he was about to die and now he is quite alright (like a) young boy.
Then they came and they took also all initiation from him and they took forgiveness from him. And again he became like that and he left his body.
Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura (is) like this. He also. Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura like this he played like games. And it seems like they have died but not died. With that body transcendental body they go there and serve.
So, kṛṣṇera saṁsāra kara chāḍi’ anācāra / jīve dayā. Always, compassionate for all jīvas. How they will have bhakti? How I should help them? How should I engage them in bhakti? If Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura was not in this age he was there in this world, we have not come to in this line. Never. And where Śrīla Prabhupāda? And where our gurudeva? And where Śrīla Bhaktivedānta Svāmī Mahārāja and then how preaching in the whole world? Nothing.
So, Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura is the main person.
Śrīla Gurudeva: Huh? Yes, like this. In this age. Following the line of Rūpa Gosvāmī (and) Mahāprabhu.
So, jīve dayā, kṛṣṇa-nāma. You should always give impression to, importance to, this name. Name is Himself. What? Rādhā and Kṛṣṇa. More superior, in some cases, There mercy is. And all powers are in name. So, you should not think that, "Oh, I should chant only 16 rounds." Never. Gone on doing. Don't miss to do your guru mantras. All. Always you should try to do.
Follow the process. Don't want to jump. If you are jumping—if you don't want to climb a tree from roots and you want to climb on the head then what? Your head will be down and roots will be up and you will fall down. So, try to begin from where?
vāco vegaṁ manasaḥ krodha-vegaṁ jihvā-vegam udaropastha-vegam etān vegān yo viṣaheta dhīraḥ sarvām apīmāṁ pṛthivīṁ sa śiṣyāt
[A wise and self-composed person who can subdue the impetus to speak, the agitation of the mind, the onset of anger, the vehemence of the tongue, the urge of the belly and the agitation of the genitals can instruct the entire world. In other words, all persons may become disciples of such a self- controlled person. (Śrī Upadeśāmṛta 1)]
So, you should read all these things. Begin from beginning and then Kṛṣṇa will be merciful. And this is the process.
Gaura premānande! Hari hari bol!
